This townhouse on an end lot presented some unique opportunities. The deed restrictions required that a certain percentage of the small site be left open as a courtyard space. We decided that the large street side facade should also have an open area both to bring light into the building and to relieve the simple form. The articulation of the 8×8 concrete block wall was also done in an effort to breakdown the somewhat brutal form. The triple height space of the kitchen capped with a large skylight highlights the kitchen as the house’s most important space. Our client bravely took on the role of builder and did an amazing job, especially considering the complexity of the building and the fact that it was his first time building.
