This project on a ranch outside of Brenham Texas started out as a hallway to connect two existing houses and morphed into a gallery and entertaining space. The owners have a large collection of Chinese antiquities including a number of large wood columns salvaged from a demolished temple. We were instructed to incorporate the columns into the design somehow. The solution was to populate a large hall with the columns in a seemingly random way, suggesting their return to a forest-like state. The owners live a portion of the year in a courtyard house in central Beijing and the multiple courtyards of this house are a reference to their other home as well as a response to the vast openness of the surrounding landscape.
